CSEC English A Paper 2 - Where to Begin

In order to write CSEC English Paper 2 sucessfully and gain your English pass, you will need to display a level of mastery in four (4) elements of English writing. The CXC exam tests your English writing skills rigorously for a total of six (6) hours to ensure a high standard of performace for ccandidates, so practicing the right skills in the lead-up to your exam is essential to getting a high pass.

These four types of writing which are tested are the following: Summary Writing, Expository Writing, Short Story Writing and Persuasive Writing. Please note that Persuasive Writing is often referred to as "Argumentative Writing", but be assured that both titles reference the same type of writing.

Briefly, the objective of the styles of writing examined on English Paper 2 can be simplified as the following:

Summary Writing - restate the complete main ideas of a longer passage in 120 words or less.
Expository Writing - re-arrange scattered facts about an event report into a sensible order.
Short Story Writing - compose an engaging piece of fiction of about 400 words with a distinct beginning, middle, and end.
Persuasive Writing - show support for or against one side of a controversial viewpoint by detailing valid supporting facts.

In order to do these tasks effectively within the 2 hours and 40 minutes allotted to you, you must practice these skills beforehand.
